I have recently set up a skype account, and would like to be able to talk to people. However, my microphone is broken beyond repair, and might as well be nonexistent. Can I write in text over skype instead? Not like texting phones, but just write text to another skype member? Thanks.

Yes. They do have where you can text-chat if you wanted to do that. I don't remember what the window is exactly called, as I rarely get on Skype, but you can tab around and will find it. Wish I could tell you what to look for exactly, but yeah. *smile*

The menu option is Send IM, and it's like any other IM window. Right-click the contact you want to text chat with, and pick Send IM.

I'd like to let you know it works only if the jaws scripts are installed. if you're a jaws user that is. or else, skype talking installed on your computer.

it works same as msn messenger most the part. alt1 for reading the last message and subsequent alt2 alt3 and so on.

I did manage to get the scripts. Am trying to make it do what I want, but working so far.

Skype needs to be setup properly in my opinion to work best. Here is what I suggest to get that done.
1. First I install the updated scripts. Right now there for 5.0 if that is the version you installed. I’ve not found updated scripts for Window Eyes, so I am only talking Jaws. Other screen reader users should use Skype talking. I get my scripts here. www.dlee.org It’s the most up to date and the scripts work.
2. Next I set up all accessible features. Alt T for tools then arrow to accessibility, right arrow, then make sure that box is checked.
3. I go tools again the get in options. I set all the options like I want them. Tab and shift tab helps you go through that list. Keyboard short cuts are nice to have, because you can answer a call from any window you are in.
4. You can read how best to use the scripts by using insert and H. You’ll get lots of information there.
5. Now to chat you arrow to the user you want, then hit the applications key and find the Send IM. When you hit inter on it you’ll be in the typing window so type and hit inter. You, if you hit your tab key will find emoticons and other features of the chat window. And like posted before me it works like MSN Messenger.
6. Hope this bit helps you more.

I think you've forgotten one thing. compact mode. that's the best thing for accessibility.

Yes in the view, but I suppose that is a personal decission. On other Skypes before 5.0 I liked the spread out view better, but on the 5.0 compact is sweet.

I don't know if you can do the same thing with 5.0, but when you're in the skype chat box to your contact, with the scripts ,you can hit Alt 1 through alt 0 for your messages.
